How it all began…
Barkev Coatings cc was registered and established in July 1988 as an entity to import water based coatings from the USA. However this did not materialise and trading started on a low profile, with the import of specialised print consumables for specific customers.
Then in October 1995, Barbara and Kevin Allan (hence the company name) took the bull by the horns and devoted all their energy to running Barkev Coatings cc as a family business with their son Marc joining at the end of 1996. This formed the nucleus and Kwa-Zulu Natal operation.
With a business base in the Western Cape and Gauteng, it became necessary to open branches in these regions to build on existing successes. The planning and search for the right partners started, and in February 1998 Michael Allan started the Western Cape branch with his daughter Carmen joining in January 2001 to manage the office. In February 1999, the Owen’s started the Gauteng branch. The Owen’s retire in October 2002 and in March 2007 Marc Allan moves to Johannesburg to manage the Gauteng branch.
Meanwhile during October 1998 due to a set of circumstances we acquired and started formulating and manufacturing water-based coatings for Litho, Flexo and Gravure packaging applications. By March 1999 we secured our first major customer and become a recognised supplier, supplying products on time and of consistent quality.
To our list of items we have continuously added new products as we identify needs in the market place and are constantly looking for new products to improve print quality, reduce down time and save our customers money.
Having an existing base and infrastructure, the next logic progression was to include machinery agencies to our portfolio. During late 2002 we made contact with Etirama, a Brazilian company manufacturing narrow web label presses. An agency agreement was signed in March 2003 and our first press arrived late December 2003 for Malawi, followed by several more for the local market.
Our first participation in a local trade show was at World of Labels in June 2003, followed by Propak in 2004, where we ran a live label machine from Etirama with great success. Then Propak 2007, another show of strength with a bigger stand and more agencies where we have the launch of the Etirama Flexo Wine (a 6 colour narrow web CI press) and Scapa mounting tapes.
April 2007 and we relocate the Gauteng office to a more central position in Edenvale. By now the Durban office is busting at the seams, and after acquiring and refurbishing an old house built in 1907, we also do a big move to get everyone under one roof, install a server to get the branches on line and upgrade the telephone system.
During 2008 we acquire an engineering and sharpening business to further expand and support our customers by offering sharpening and general engineering which is headed by Brett Allan. We acquire more machinery, import HSS sheets, expand our product range and grow rapidly. In May 2010 we acquire a CNC component manufacturing business (QDE Components) to increase our range of products while depending less on out sourcing of work.
Come 2012 and we acquire a 2500m2 factory in Hagart Road, Pinetown and move Barkev Engineering, QDE components, Barkev KZN and Barkev Head Office all under one roof with our new upgraded server.
By now the Gauteng office has run out of space with storage facilities off site. In 2013 we acquire a 360m2 factory in Sebenza, Edenvale and move everything under one roof with a branch manager taking over while Marc Allan moves back to Durban to take up the position of national sales and marketing for the group which includes exports.
Our exposure into Africa now includes regular exports to Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique and Swaziland.
2013 is also the year we celebrate our 25th year and do a rebranding of the company with a modernised logo.
The three pillars our business is based on, is quality products; service excellence and people who come from and have an understanding of the industry.
